A memorial was envisioned for Staten Islands north shore to honor the boroughs victims of the September 11 New York City attacks. The site chosen on Staten Island was part of a 2001 esplanade bikeway system that already featured a signage system by Thats Nice.
Thats Nice was invited onto a team led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, which brought broad expertise in landscape development projects. The team was challenged with bringing architect Masayuki Sonos winning design submission to life. The objective was to create a permanent, solemn place of tribute and remembrance for the victims families and generations of visitors.
“More than 3,000 people attended the dedication ceremony for the Staten Island September 11 Memorial”
STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE, SEPTEMBER 2004
Masayuki Sonos structure symbolized giant postcards and over 250 granite ‘postage stamp plaques that were integrated for individual victims required typographic templates for etching. Project information and wayfinding signs made up the other signage components.
Our goal for the signage development, within the remit of the team and the sensitivity for the project, was to create a system that would complement the original bikeway signage, while being unique and appropriate to the memorial.
