FMC Lithium manufactures butyllithium and organometallics for synthetic rubber production, as well as pharmaceutical and agricultural applications.
Organolithium compounds are highly reactive materials. There are three principle hazards associated with these compounds: corrosivity to the skin, flammability, and pyrophoricity. The inherent corrosive nature of all the classes of butyllithiums can cause chemical and thermal burns upon exposure. The butyllithium compounds are flammable themselves and are typically supplied in an organic solvent, which exacerbates the flammability.
