If those three stars look familiar, there’s a good chance you recognize them from the courtroom scene in Animal House, which means that you might be wondering why this patch Nigel found says “Tennessee,” when Animal House takes place in Pennsylvania. Here’s why: the film was shot on the campus of the University of Oregon, and while a suitably sized Pennsylvania flag couldn’t be found, the Oregon flag was also ruled out because it includes the words “STATE OF OREGON.” The set director chose the most generic flag he could find, which turned out to be Tennessee’s. In case you’re wondering, the three stars represent the three “Grand Divisions” of the state – East, Middle, and West Tennessee – and the blue circle represents the unity of those regions.
